Alpacas
require very little in the way of care. Depending on the type of pasture
you have, up to 10 alpacas can be housed on only 1 acre! Alpacas will
seek shelter in very extreme weather, so a barn or three-sided
shed is optimal. We prefer 4 ft. no-climb field fencing, although
regular field fencing can be used.
Alpacas love green foliage, especially blackberry bushes! They should
be kept away from rhododendrons, all varieties of yew, and laurel.
We supplement our alpaca's diet with orchard grass. Alpacas only eat
1% of their body weight a day, making them very inexpensive to feed.
They love grain! We use grain as a training tool and as a special
way to bond with our alpacas. When they see us with the grain scoop,
they come running! We prefer Llama Plus or Mazuri Alpaca Chews. These
can be found at local feed stores.
Mineral blocks are an excellent supplement for your alpacas, our favorite
product is Stillwater Minerals, we swear by its results.
Alpacas do need their nails trimmed quarterly and vaccines given annually,
we are happy to help and teach you how!
